What is Jainism?

Jainism is one of the three ancient faiths of India together with Sanatan-Hindu (‘Hinduism’), and Buddhism.

How many Jains are there?

There is no official census of Jains available. Estimates vary between 7 and 10 million worldwide. The highest number is in India; primarily in Mumbai, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. Of the diaspora, USA has the highest number of Jains estimated at over 100,000 and UK comes second with 30,000. in discussions amongst themselves, encouraging unity within the Jain community.

What is IoJ?

Institute of Jainology is a voluntary charitable organisation which was formally established in 1986 through a Trust Deed. It has a sister organisation in India, with offices based in Ahmedabad. The Institute was formed to represent the Jain diaspora in the UK and other countries of the world.

Where is it based?

In the UK, its offices are in London. In India, its offices are in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Who runs it?

The organisation is managed by 10 Trustees with four Trustees holding the posts of Chairman, Deputy Chairman, Hon. Secretary, and Treasurer. Patrons and advisors have been appointed as necessary.

What are its aims?

The preliminary aim is to propagate the teachings of Mahavira through activities and events in the areas of Art, Culture, and Education. Compassion and non-violence towards all living beings is the main aim.

What does it do?

To propagate the message of Mahavira, it manages events through the channels of art, culture and education. It manages projects and also participates in interfaith societies and governmental departments to represent the Jain view.

How can I help?

You can help through participating in activities, through representing the Jain faith in intercultural events and in contributing funds to the Institute.
