Primary Education

Dr Mehool Sanghrajka undertook the task of developing a series of text books under the title: Learn Jainism. Working as the series editor, Mehool assigned the task of authoring the first book: Discover Jainism to Colin Hynson, a writer specialised in Children’s books and an educational broadcaster. As may be observed from the book, it has been designed to attract the students of Primary Schools (Key Stage II and III) with choice of colours, pictures, font size and style, and unbiased contents presented in simple and accurate English.

The book meets statutory requirements of the Qualification and Curriculum Authority (QCA) and has been accepted as a text book for Religious Education (RE) in primary schools in England and Wales.

The book was first launched by Harrow SACRE in the Council Chambers on 11th July, 2007 and thereafter in other councils.

As a novelty, this book has a partner website www.learnjainism.org which provides notes for teachers as well as ‘fun n learn’ methods of crosswords, quiz, puzzle, jumbles, etc., for the students to enjoy whilst learning. For incorrect answers, reference is made to the page number in the book, thus inspiring the student to read the book. To avoid repetition and boredom, each of the games has an algorithm so that on starting again, it changes form and words.

The second book in the series: Learn Jainism is expected to be published later this year and will contain popular stories from Jainism which will be based on teaching good ethics and morals. Watch this space!

Our Honorary Secretary & Trustee, Dr Harshad Sanghrajka is  a Consultant to the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) in England; Consultant to the RE Council for England and Wales. He is also a member of the Strategy Committee of RE Council and Department for Children, School and Family (DCSF), appointed to review the Parliamentary Guidelines on RE.

His participation in these Government established education bodies will certainly help implementation of making Jain studies in the National R E Curriculum that much faster.

QCA issue a quarterly report on their activities – the report dated March 2009 is attached for those who are interested in these activities and development.
